Packing for a Summer Weekend

YES.  It is FINALLY that time of year when the weather is fine and weekend getaways become a normal part of life.  As a chronic over-packer, I find it tricky to boil down to the essentials for these short weekend trips.  After much research and testing, I've finally mastered the art of the weekend getaway bag. Here is my strategy:

1. The Weekender Bag

Of course it all starts with the bag - it can't be too large!  I love this one from Anya Hindmarch, especially if you're throwing it in the backseat of a convertible.

2. Toiletries

I decant everything into small bottles so that I not only save space, but also keep the bag at a manageable weight.  Muji is my go-to for a matching set.  Your other option is to use the travel size versions, which are always so adorable.  And don't forget sunscreen!

3. Pack Versatile Pieces

I know, this is easier said than done, but if you're going to the beach, there are definitely pieces that work for day and can be dressed up for nighttime with a pair of earrings and a smokey-eye.  Pack a pair of beach sandals and a pair of slightly dressier sandals.  A note on workout clothes: If you're definitely going to play tennis or go hiking, pack the pieces you need. If you're just going to be taking walks on the beach and swimming, there's no need to weigh yourself down with these extra pieces.

4. Bathing Suits + Cover ups

These are so small, and while you only need one, you can of course bring a couple...  A girl's gotta have options. Same goes for the cover ups, which can be quite versatile.

5. Sleepwear

Whether you are staying in a hotel or someone's home, don't forget your AM sleepwear!  It's perfect for all of the sleeping and pancake-eating the weekend has in store. We've put together our summer weekend favorites here.

6. If you find you have a little room in your case, I always try to bring my AM Cashmere Travel Set.  I never know when I'm going to need a little extra warmth on chilly summer nights.

Whatever your plans, don't forget to take a minute and enjoy being outside.  There is nothing better!
